National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), West Morris Section will sponsor a daylong “Trip to the Shtetl” on Monday, Oct. 23, with Rabbi Shalom Lubin, spiritual leader of Congregation Shaya Ahavat Torah in Parsippany and director of Chabad of Southeast Morris County in Madison.  Rabbi Lubin led a popular three-part NCJW lecture series this past spring, and this trip promises to be a fun and in-depth exploration of the Brooklyn Hasidic community. The trip is open to both NCJW, West Morris members and non-members.

Here is the schedule for the day:

8:45 a.m.: Departure from UJC Whippany by bus (parking details will be supplied once you register)

10:30 a.m.: Arrive in Queens at Ohel (Gravesite of Lubavitcher Rebbe) 

Noon: Arrive at Crown Heights to visit the Brooklyn Hasidic Community

Visit with a Hasidic Rebbetzin in her home

Tour Chabad Lubavitch International Headquarters, 770 Eastern Parkway

Lunch on your own at one of the many local Jewish eateries

Walking tour of Kingston Avenue, the main shopping hub in Crown Heights

Visit HaSofer: Scribes of Jewish Calligraphy (Torah, Mezuzah, Tefillin) 

3:30 p.m.: Experience a Herring Tasting at the Benz’s Gourmet Appetizing

4:00 p.m.: Depart Brooklyn

6:00 p.m.: Arrive back in Whippany

(All times approximate, except for the 8:45 a.m. meeting time. The bus will leave promptly.)

The cost for the trip is $45 per person for NCJW, West Morris members, and $54 per person for non-members (includes bus, tour, water and light snacks on the bus). Anyone not already a NCJW, West Morris member can join the organization at the $35 annual dues rate and receive the member rate for this trip. Your place will be confirmed once your check is received. Space is limited, so reserve your spot soon.

Attendees are encouraged to wear modest attire, kippot (that is, yarmulkes, for men), comfortable walking shoes, and to bring an umbrella and a camera.
