MARIE NOEL - KEYNOTE SPEAKER Marie Noël, who addressed the United Nations General Assembly this year on the Second International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, was the keynote speaker at the 2007Awards Reception for our sixth-grade diversity contest, "What Prejudice Means to Me." Marie is the first student ever to address the UN General Assembly. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SHARES HIS STORY WITH MBS STUDENTS Murray Goldfinger, a Holocaust survivor and grandparent of MBS junior Emily Prentiss, shared his emotional story with Middle School students during a special assembly on February 14. Mr. Goldfinger, who was 13 years old and living in Poland when World War II began, spoke about how his family was seized by the Nazis, and the horrors he experienced in the concentration camps. He and his brother were the only survivors from his family -- his parents, five sisters and another brother were all killed during the war. Despite the atrocities going on around him, Mr. Goldfinger said that he learned “never to show fear. You must always live in hope.” Several times, he narrowly escaped death. While imprisoned in a work camp, he was shot and nearly killed for breaking a shovel. On April 11, 1945, Mr. Goldfinger was finally liberated from the concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany. Two years later, he immigrated to the United States, and lived in Morris County, within walking distance of Morristown-Beard School. “This School has always been special to me,” said Mr. Goldfinger. He said he hopes that the students will remember his story and learn from it. “There will be no more Holocaust survivors in the next 10 to 15 years,” said Mr. Goldfinger. “Future generations must be shown that this can’t happen again.” United States Holocaust Memorial Museum More Speakers Willis Reed, Member of the NBA Hall of Fame Ed Kranepool, Former member of the New York Mets Brian Thompson, New Jersey reporter with NewsChannel 4 Jane Moffet, Member of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League Robert Scott, Member of the New York Black Yankees of the Negro Leagues |
