Bring a smile to a child’s face. Volunteers needed for this wonderful new initiative.
Many of us remember the excitement of having new clothes for a new school year. Now schoolchildren from 4 to 17 years old in housing provided by Homeless Solutions in Morristown will have a similar experience when they shop for back-to-school items—all free—at a special “Back 2 School Store” event our Section is sponsoring.
The event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 6, and Morristown Jewish Center–Beit Yisrael has graciously agreed to provide space for us to set up our “store” at the synagogue, 177 Speedwell Ave., Morristown.
Donations of back-to-school items from individuals and retailers throughout the area will help fill our shelves with new clothes and other supplies to prepare the students for the upcoming school year.
The Back 2 School Store will outfit each of approximately 50 children. Volunteers—both women and men—are needed as “personal shoppers” to help the children try on clothes and shoes, and choose from all the options. Each child will shop for a complete new outfit of clothing (shirt, pants, winter jacket and sneakers), plus underwear, socks, hat and gloves. Additional volunteers will help with setup and breakdown and other tasks before, during and after the event.
We were inspired by a very successful effort in Essex County, coordinated by NCJW, Essex County Section, that has served more than 5,000 schoolchildren over 10 years. Volunteers have a terrific time and the schoolchildren all leave with a full shopping bag and a smile.
To volunteer for this exciting new project, or to sponsor a child for $150 or make another donation, email email@example.com. The full cost of each outfit is $150, though we will accept smaller contributions in the form of checks payable to our Section.
The project is being coordinated by Melanie Levitan, Karen Secular, and Kim Ganz.
