Bring a smile to a child’s face through this wonderful initiative.

The response to last year’s Back 2 School event was so terrific that we’ve decided to do it again. More than 25 volunteers helped outfit 41 schoolchildren. This year we’re doing it a little differently, based on feedback from the families, the staff at Homeless Solutions, and our volunteers.

The event will take place on Sunday, Aug. 5, and Morristown Jewish Center–Beit Yisrael has again agreed to provide space for us to set up our “store” at the synagogue, 177 Speedwell Ave., Morristown. Watch your email for specific times and volunteer opportunities.

Donations of back to school items from individuals and retailers throughout the area will help fill our shelves with new clothes and other supplies to prepare the students for the upcoming school year.

The Back 2 School Store will outfit each of approximately 55 children. Volunteers—both women and men—are needed as “personal shoppers” to help the children try on clothes and choose from all the options. Each child will shop for a complete new outfit of clothing (shirt, pants, winter jacket and sneakers), plus underwear, socks, hat and gloves. Additional volunteers will help with setup and breakdown and other tasks before, during and after the event.

We were inspired by a very successful effort in Essex County that has served more than 5,000 schoolchildren over 10 years. Volunteers have a terrific time and the schoolchildren all leave with a full shopping bag and a smile.
